Image Tools is three ways to alter a PNG, JPEG or WebP file on your own machine, differing mainly in intent. The Compressor is for making the file smaller — a quality slider and a maximum width, downscaling only. The Resizer is for exact dimensions — a percentage or specific pixel sizes, and it can enlarge. The Converter is for changing the format between JPG, PNG and WebP, handling transparency when the target is JPEG. All three decode and re-encode through a canvas in the browser; the file is never uploaded.
Which tool should I use?
- Use the Compressor when the goal is a lighter file: set a quality level and a maximum width. A PNG stays a PNG; a JPEG or WebP comes out as JPEG.
- Use the Resizer when you need specific dimensions — scale by percentage (1-500%, ratio kept) or type exact width and height, optionally unlocking the ratio. It keeps the original format and can upscale, though upscaling adds no detail.
- Use the Converter when only the format needs to change; PNG output is always lossless, JPG and WebP have a quality control, and transparent areas are flattened onto white for JPEG.
Limitations and things to know
- Only PNG, JPEG and WebP are supported — no GIF, AVIF, HEIC, SVG or TIFF — with a 20 MB file limit and roughly 40 megapixels once decoded.
- The Compressor never enlarges (its scale factor is capped at 1) and re-saves WebP as JPEG; on a PNG the quality slider has little effect because PNG stays lossless.
- The Resizer's output is capped at 6,000 pixels per side and about 16 megapixels; dimensions are rounded to whole pixels.
- Converting to JPEG drops any transparency by compositing onto white; converting between lossy formats re-compresses and can soften the image.
